Dirtysomething - Fan Commentary

Paul Reynolds (press gang, let him have it) plays Dog, a dreadlocked traveler. He meets and falls in love with respectable girl Becca (Rachel Weisz of the mummy, constant gardener) he persuades Becca to give up thenine to five and join him on the road.

When the cold weather comes, Dog and Becca have to find a squat to sit out the winter. Becca accidentally breaks into the house of a lonely and abandoned old man, but to her and dog's surprise he allows them to stay - for the company.

Unfortunately the old man dies (happy, but suddenly) At the suggestion of another, older traveler (Bernard Hill of Boys From the Blackstuff) they stay where they are. However, the flat is not a squat and bills need to be paid.

Becca goes back to work for an architecture firm and complains that all dog does is laze around all day whilst she's back in the system. To make up for his laziness Dog starts to "do-up" the house, a task that becomes an obsession for him. The couple start to drift apart as Becca is seduced by her new career (and by the lifestyle and ambitions of her new boss, Rufus Sewell) and dog does nothing but DIY.

Eventually Becca is presented with a choice - move north with her new job to manage the design and construction of a community centre, or stay with Dog.  Dog realizes his mistake and interrupts one of becca's important presentations to get her to come back to the house.

When she arrives she's very angry but dog surprises her by blowing up the house. Becca then reveals that she's bought a converted bus for them to go traveling again.

The moral of the story - "Play it safe, never get off the bus."

As far as Rufus' role - he plays a yuppie architect with a lovely house and uptight wife. He has slightly hippyish pretensions but his main function is as a contrast to dog. There is a frisson of potential romance between him and becca, but nothing comes of it.  He’s more of a lifestyle rival to dog than a love rival.

Well I finally watched this today, twice.  I'm still not sure how I feel about it completely, but yes, I did like it.  It's very odd (my husband walked out about 15 min. into it) it's very quirky, it's very cute, it's very sweet, it's very............hmmmmmm, not sure what words to even use!

If you've read the review on Maxx's site about it, you'll know what it's about.  I won't give any more away as yet.  But it really is a great little story about two people that have something, want something else, get something else, don't like what they get, think they want what they had to begin with, find out they want both, and end up finding a way to have it!  How's that for a review???  LOL

Rachel Weisz is fantastic (this is her first film) and they guy who plays "Dog" is hysterical!  Rufus is adorable (similar to Ross in ASF) both in his role and just physically (although you can see the former teeth!).   One person said that they thought Clive wanted to be like Becca and Dog............I think he liked the IDEA of being like them, but it wasn't who he was.  Just like I think they liked the IDEA of being like him (at least Becca did), but realized she wasn't as much as she thought she was.

Again, I don't want to give too much away, because this really is a film that you need to EXPERIENCE, not just watch.  It's quirky in the way Sachem Farm and Gone to Seed was (only more so), yet it's different too.  It's like a sweet little trinket that you found exploring one day and hid away in a box under your bed.  And then you think about it and you have to run to your room and pull it out and examine it all over again.........it's that special, with a little oddity thrown in!
